Katie Kalvoda

Though only 36, Katie Kalvoda has already lived many professional lives. After graduating from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1995 with a degree in economics, she started out as an accountant at PricewaterhouseCoopers before moving into middle-market investment banking, advising on real estate for Citigroup in Orange County.
In 1999 she went to work for long-time investment consultant Budge Collins, first helping to wind down his advisory business and then setting up a broker-dealer, of which she was president. Kalvoda was inking a deal to buy the broker-dealer from Collins in 2005 when a family emergency brought her home to take over management of the family estate.
She launched an investment office, Newport Wealth Management, that is independent from the family itself and began investing in hedge funds as a way to diversify. Newport Wealth does not manage portfolios for other families, but it does invite them to invest alongside it in deals.
