Hedge Fund Rising Stars: Javier Dyer

    Javier Dyer
    Permal Group

Javier Dyer began trading high-yield and emerging-markets debt after going to work for Atlantic Security Bank in Miami in 1999, shortly after the native Peruvian earned his undergraduate degree in business from the Universidad de Lima. His boss ran a small fund of hedge funds, and Dyer would occasionally meet with hedge fund managers while at the bank. In 2003, Dyer left to get an MBA in finance from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he interned at a merger-arbitrage fund run by New York–based hedge fund firm Tiedemann Investment Group. That experience helped him land a job at New York–based Permal Group, a $20 billion alternative-investment manager that liked Dyer’s credit background and appointed him to head the firm’s flagship fixed-income-focused fund of hedge funds. Dyer, 38, has grown the business from $900 million in assets to about $4.5 billion and is now deputy chief investment officer for the overall fund-of-hedge-funds business.
