Wang, 36, grew up in the LA suburb of Culver City and earned an engineering degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, before joining consulting firm Deloitte in 1999. That job sent her to Germany, but she soon returned to her hometown, then headed to New York to pursue an MBA at Columbia Business School. Wang came back to the Los Angeles area in 2005 to become an associate portfolio manager with Irvine-based fund-of-hedge-funds firm Pacific Alternative Asset Management Co. In late 2010 the California Institute of Technology hired her as director of absolute-return investments for its $1.9 billion endowment. Under CIO Scott Richland, Wang plays a key role as the head of hedge funds, which make up 34 percent of assets and posted a 9.7 percent return in 2012. |
