The 2014 Tech 50: Daniel Coleman

As head of one of the world’s largest electronic market makers, Daniel Coleman would seem to have a lot at stake in all the fuss about high frequency trading stirred up by the release this spring of Michael Lewis’sFlash Boys. But the CEO of Jersey City, New Jersey–based KCG Holdings, created by the July 2013 merger of Getco Holding Co. and troubled Knight Capital Group, hopes to benefit from any heightened regulatory scrutiny of U.S. equity markets. “It gives us a great opportunity to really engage with clients and potential clients on market structure issues and how to achieve best execution in markets that are reasonably complicated,” says Coleman, who joined Chicago-based Getco in 2010 after a 24-year career at UBS and its predecessor firms. “I think it’s very appropriate for us to play a leadership role.” KCG’s global execution services business, which includes its trading venues, generated $87.2 million in revenue during the first quarter of 2014, up 4 percent from the previous quarter. Market-making revenue jumped 19 percent, to $277.3 million. “Our goal long-term is to be a leading market maker in all the major asset classes and all the major geographies,” adds Coleman, who turns 50 in August. “We think we can do this with only 1,200 people or so, and that’s because of technology.”
