Slipping from second place, Sanford C. Bernstein earns the No. 3 spot this year. From his base in London,Oswald Clintprovides coverage for the firm, reporting on 16 European exploration and production names. “Os and team dig deeper on fundamental analysis than is typical,” shares one fund manager. The 41-year-old researcher highlighted his bullish stance on Portugal’s Galp Energia in January 2015, thanks largely to the potential for its operations in Brazil. Through mid-January the integrated oil producer’s Frankfurt-listed shares rose 12.7 percent, to €12.70, besting the regional sector by 31.1 percentage points. Galp still bears an outperform rating, as “the one oil stock where volume growth trumps oil prices,” says Clint. In September he upgraded BP from market perform to outperform, crediting its recent exploration deal with Russia’s Rosneft and deeming the stock a steal at 340.20p. In mid-January the U.K.-based industry leader’s shares were trading at 338.15p, posting a gain of 1.1 percent over a period in which its European peers fell 9.8 percent. Clint projects a rise to 415.80p.
