UBS reclaims third place, the position it held before slipping to runner-up in 2014, fielding a team of six under the direction of newcomersMyles AllsopandKieran Daly. Former crew chief Julien Garran joined independent shop MacroStrategy Partnership in September, the same month that Johannesburg-based Daly, 46, signed on from Macquarie First South Securities. While there Daly led mining coverage; he previously tracked the sector at Investec and worked as head of strategy at Anglo Coal. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mining engineering from Camborne School of Mines in the U.K. and an MBA from South Africa’s Wits Business School at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. Allsop, 41, works out of London. Before he began tracking this sector, he co-managed UBS’s paper and packaging analysts. They earned first place in 2007 through 2011 and second in 2012, the year he changed coverage. He joined UBS in late 2000 and moved from corporate finance to equity research two years later. Allsop earned a master’s degree in classics from England’s University of Cambridge. Reporting on 24 stocks in this sector, Allsop, Daly and their colleagues recently turned negative on Switzerland-based midcap Ferrexpo. In April they cut their rating on the steel-pellets producer from neutral to sell, citing deteriorating iron-ore forecasts. Soon enough, the shares headed downward and by mid-January had sunk 68 percent, to 19.50p, trailing the regional sector by 13.3 percentage points. The team prefers Acacia Mining, a U.K.-based gold miner (until recently known as African Barrick Gold), owing partly to the November departure of an underperforming COO with not six months on the job. Trading at 168p in mid-January, the stock was 63.7 percent below the researchers’ price target. “They are knowledgeable, thorough, responsive and all-around top-notch,” one fund manager sums up.
