In second place isYoshitaka Nagao, a newcomer to this roster who scores the highest position among all analysts earning their first appearances in a given sector. The Nomura analyst, 37, is not altogether new to the All-Japan Research Team, however; he also claims the No. 2 spot on the Broadcasting lineup, rising from No. 3. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Hyogo’s Kwansei Gakuin University and an MBA in finance from the University of San Francisco School of Management. Upon obtaining his master’s in 2004, Nagao joined Nomura to track telecommunications companies. He switched to reporting on Japan’s broadcasters three years later and added coverage of Internet stocks in 2012. “Nagao-san provides a good basis for discussions regarding one of Japan’s growing domestic sectors,” attests one fund manager, who singles out for praise his research on “GMO Internet and an uncovered idea, GMO Pepabo, Japan’s equivalent to Etsy in the U.S.” Tokyo’s GMO Internet, which provides Internet-related infrastructure, media and settlement services to corporate customers, is among the researcher’s top picks. In January he alerted clients to the company’s potential in the online consumer-to-consumer trade. “Gross merchandise sales on the Minne market provided by GMO Internet consolidated subsidiary GMO Pepabo came to ¥4.5 billion [$40 million] in 2015, 4.2 times the prior-year level,” the analyst noted. “The company targets gross merchandise sales on Minne of ¥10 billion in 2016. We expect margins to improve at GMO Internet as gross merchandise sales on Minne expand.” Given his current investment focus on financial technology, mobile commerce and online support for business-to-business companies, he also is touting Tokyo-headquartered industry leaders: price comparison site operator Kakaku.com; Rakuten, a top e-commerce concern; and Recruit Holdings Co., whose businesses include human resources, temporary staffing and travel and restaurant booking.
