Repeating in second place,Ching Jen (James) Kanand his 15-person Deutsche Bank squad “use bespoke and tailor-made indicators that enable them to deliver profitable recommendations,” one portfolio manager says. “James has a global and regional view of the materials sector and is not afraid to deliver contrarian comments that add incremental value for investors. They are simply the best in town.” Another admirer offers that “the thoughtfulness of James’s research differentiates him from his peers. The team has written several well-researched and in-depth pieces, such as the recent report on the lithium sector, and has also organized many helpful site visits to China.” For his part, the 42-year-old Kan notes that his crew is upbeat on lithium producers. “Expectations for high growth in the electric vehicle industry should continue to drive demand,” he explains. “Meanwhile, supply additions won’t be able to catch up with demand growth, in our view. This demand-supply tightness will clearly support lithium prices and in turn have a positive impact on stocks in the sector.” More broadly, however, he and his colleagues are cautious on the region’s basic materials shares, 80 of which are in their coverage universe. “The sector should continue to experience improving demand in the near term, driven by the Chinese government’s recent stimulus — in particular, the investment in infrastructure projects,” Kan believes. “However, fundamental overcapacity issues in China haven’t been well resolved, and the economic outlook is not resilient enough to create a sustainable upcycle for basic materials. As such, we believe the sector will come under pressure again in the second half of 2016.” His crew’s “proactive research accompanied by broad access to company management teams and related industry experts is unmatched by competitors,” cheers another buy-side fan.
