Ryan Randall, 43, belongs to the generation of experienced hedge fund managers that is now finding its way into public pension funds. Randall, who grew up in Fremont, California, where his father coached high school football, earned a political science degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, and started out as a public accountant with Ernst & Young in San Francisco. He joined that city’s investment banking industry, working at Bankers Trust Co. and Montgomery Securities before co-founding an electronic trading company that E*Trade Financial Corp. acquired in 2000. Randall worked at E*Trade before entering the hedge fund business. In 2008 he took a job at San Francisco hedge fund firm Passport Capital, becoming an analyst and director of public policy, with a focus on financial services. Spending lots of time in Washington in this role, Randall moved to the nation’s capital. In 2012, Fairfax County, Virginia, hired him to help oversee its $5.9 billion in retirement assets. Lead investment officer for the $1.3 billion Fairfax County Uniformed Retirement System, Randall is also reviewing alternative investments and manager due diligence across the three pension funds that make up the larger organization. |
