The 2013 All-America Research Team: Retailing/Specialty Stores, No. 1: Brian Tunick
For an eighth consecutive year, J.P. Morgan analystBrian Tunick, 39, is deemed the sector champion. “Brian distinguishes himself with his deep-dive reports into companies” he tracks, according to one satisfied client. “He provides insights into these otherwise widely followed stocks.” Money managers would have done well to heed the researcher’s advice, for example, on Houston-based Men’s Wearhouse. In April, Tunick reiterated his long-standing buy recommendation — a position he first staked out in August 2010. He cited the retailer’s potential sale of K&G Fashion Superstore, its underperforming off-price division, as well as its increased share repurchases and the stock’s dividend yield. Indeed, “the market-share leader in tailored clothing and tuxedo rentals in North America,” he explains, “is now in the early innings of becoming more shareholder friendly.” The Men’s Wearhouse shares had increased from $33.82 to $37.65 by the end of August 2013, improving by 11.3 percent at a time when the sector rose by 10.3 percent. Tunick “has a great sense of what everyone is thinking and a great feel for market sentiment.” —Katie Gilbert |
