Repeating in third place, Bank of America Merrill Lynch’sRonald Epsteinmonitors a broad spectrum of 28 aerospace and defense electronics names and is prized for providing “the best customer service in the space,” in the words of one fund manager. In January, Epstein dubbed Embraer a top pick, citing the Brazilian commercial aircraft manufacturer’s rigorous order flow and backlog of business. Its New York Stock Exchange–listed shares had by mid-September jumped 23.9 percent, to $39.97, besting the sector by 20.4 percentage points, and the analyst believes that a price of $48 is justified. One name that Epstein has come to view less favorably is Boeing Co. of Chicago. After long holding a buy rating on the aircraft maker’s stock, he downgraded it to neutral in July, seeing trouble ahead thanks to industrywide oversupply. Boeing’s stock had barely budged by mid-September, closing at $126.31 and trading in line with the sector.
