Capital One Financial Corp. is a $290 billion-in-assets bank holding company, but for chief information officer Robert Alexander, it’s all about technology. “What we’re focused on is how do we become a great software development organization,” says the U.S. Air Force veteran and former Bain & Co. consultant, who joined the McLean, Virginia–based bank in 1998 and has been CIO since 2007. “If you’re going to be a great software company, you have to have the network and hardware to support it.” The 49-year-old has gone so far as to brand his department Capital One Technology. The unit aims to bring top software engineering talent together in work spaces away from headquarters to encourage collaboration and creativity in an “agile development” environment. The bank is certainly up to speed on cloud computing and big data, using a private cloud along with public utilities like Amazon Web Services and Hadoop, an open-source platform for extremely large-scale processing and analytics. The technology group has been working on security and antifraud measures, mobile apps and online innovations including a feature that translates credit card billing disclosures into plain English. “If you’re not building it better, faster, more innovatively and creatively,” Alexander says, “then you’re going to get left behind.”
