Okines, who also co-captains (with Francesca DiPasquantonio) a runner-up team in Luxury Goods, expects that number to rise over the next 12 months in line with an anticipated increase in IPO activity among these retailers. “Generally,” he notes, “we like the electrical products category and expect it to perform well” early this year. The pair is less positive about clothing retailers in the interim, he adds, “though we expect 2014 to be a good year for the category.” Among the analysts’ top picks is Carphone Warehouse Group, an independent U.K. mobile phone retailer. They have recommended buying the stock over the past year on the back of several factors, Okines advises, including a strong smartphone product replacement cycle, the dissolution of the company’s European joint venture with Best Buy Co. (whereby Carphone purchased the U.S. electronics giant’s 50 percent stake) and management’s subsequent pursuit of strategic ventures with European partnerships and via its Connected World Services business-to-business division. Carphone’s shares jumped 33.9 percent in 2013, to 271 pence, surpassing the sector’s 27 percent gain. The crew delivers research that “is very detailed and insightful, focused on what really drives a particular stock,” reports one London-based fund analyst. Okines and his colleague “know the sector as well as anyone and have great contacts in the industry,” the supporter adds.
