Adam Spielman & team, Citi
The buy side says: “He knows these companies better than anyone.”
Citi’s Adam Spielman topped the roster from 2007 through 2010; he slipped to second place in 2011 but regains lost ground this year. The 45-year-old now heads up a team of three — Spielman and one associate work out of London, with a colleague in Mumbai — that covers both beverages and tobacco (three stocks in the former sector, eight in the latter). With regard to tobacco companies, “we’re very confident that earnings growth will remain robust, despite the storm clouds gathering around Europe and the world,” he says. The analysts especially like U.K.-based Imperial Tobacco, largely because of improvements in its price-earnings ratio. Spielman “brings to the table a comprehensive understanding of the sector, combined with fascinating insights into the backstory of marketing and packaging innovation,” cheers one fan.
