Hall of Fame 36 - John Rohs

John Rohs was a newcomer to the sell side when he tied for third place in Lodging & Restaurants on the 1985 All-America Research Team — the first of his 20 appearances in the ranking, through 1999. Rohs, who had worked at T. Rowe Price Associates in Baltimore before making the move to Wall Street, “is a very good analyst who works very hard at communicating with his clients,” one money manager told Institutional Investor that year. Two years later, Rohs achieved the first of his 11 first-place finishes, with clients praising his work anticipating what the industry would look like in the 1990s. He was among the first to break with the bears when he urged clients to buy Hilton Hotels Corp. in 1989. The call turned out to be a winner. “John gives you a great feel for what’s happening in the industry,” one client told II that year.

In 1992 we split the sector into Gaming & Lodging and Restaurants — and Rohs took the top position in each category that year on behalf of his firm, which by that time was dubbed Wertheim Schroder & Co.
